PUBLIC HOLIDAYS IN 2024

At the beginning of this new year 2024, may it be great, please find bellow the list of Public Holidays in 2024, as provided for by the Romanian Labour Code. Aside from January 1st and January 2nd, already passed, the public holidays in 2024 are the following:

  • Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7 - Epiphany and St John the Baptiste
  • Wednesday, January 24 - The Union of the Romanian Principalities Day
  • Wednesday, May 1st - International Labour Day
  • Friday, May 3, Sunday May 5 and Monday, May 6  - The Orthodox Easter
  • Saturday, June 1st - International Children’s Day
  • Sunday, June 23 and Monday, June 24 - The Pentecost
  • Thursday, August 15  - The Assumption
  • Saturday, November 30 - Saint Andrew, patron of the modern Romania
  • Sunday, December 1st - The National Day of Romania
  • Wednesday, December 25, and Thursday, December 26 - Christmas days

Under the Government Decision no. 1307/2023, in 2024, state employees have been granted 3 more free days: May 3, August 16, and December 27. In order to ensure that these free days are be made up for, public institutions and authorities shall extend working hours until May 31, 2024, August 30, 2024, and January 31, 2025, in line with the plans established under administrative deeds issued by each public authority and institution.

Employees performing an interruptible activity and who work during public holidays (e.g., health care facilities, catering units, etc.), must be granted paid days off within 30 days since the holiday worked. If, for well-grounded reasons, compensation in days off is not possible, the employee shall be entitled to a compensation of at least 100% of the gross basic salary in addition to the normal salary for the hours worked.

For the record, people belonging to other religions than orthodox may be entitled to 2 days for each of the major religious holidays of their religion.
